What to check when buying a car from the US: a checklist

Steps to take before choosing a car at an auction or from a seller, and after it arrives.

Before buying: the VIN history

The first step when choosing a car is checking the VIN. The make, model and year should match what the VIN says.

Look at the title status (clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood), auction and crash records, mileage data and recall campaigns.

Work out the total cost

The car's price is only part of the cost. Auction fees, transport within the US, sea freight, customs duties, insurance and repairs are added.

Customs duties can depend on engine size, age and vehicle type; verify the calculation with official sources. For a salvage car, count the repair cost separately.

Understand the title status

The status on the title affects the price and later resale. We have a separate guide on salvage, rebuilt and flood statuses; in short, they point to serious damage in the past.

If no status is mentioned, always confirm it with the history.

Shipping and documents

Cars are usually shipped by container from a US port; to reach Azerbaijan, a route through a Georgian port is often used. The route and timing depend on the company.

Check that all documents (bill of sale, export papers, cargo documents) match the VIN. Any mismatch can cause problems at customs.

Inspection after arrival

As soon as the car arrives, show it to an independent specialist: computer diagnostics, body geometry, airbags, paint thickness and suspension should be checked.

On hybrids and electric cars the high-voltage battery is checked separately. If problems turn up, reassess the price and repair plan right away.

Warning signs

Be careful if the seller refuses to give the VIN, the price is far below the market, photos do not show the damaged parts, details in the documents do not match, or you are pressed to pay quickly.

If in doubt, delay the purchase. A car that was not properly checked may look cheap but cost a lot later.

In short

Before buying a car from the US, check the VIN history, work out the total cost and get an independent inspection after arrival. A low price on its own is not a good sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is importing a car from the US worth it?

It depends on the type and price of the car, shipping and customs costs, and whether it needs repair. Add up all the costs before deciding.

Can I inspect an auction car in advance?

You can study the photos, the auction records and the VIN history, but a physical inspection is usually not possible. That is why an inspection after arrival matters.

What does a VIN check show?

A VIN shows the manufacturer, model year, technical data and, where available, recall campaigns. A full report includes auction, crash and mileage records.

This article is general information and does not replace an independent technical inspection of a specific vehicle. Rules and duties can change: check official sources before you decide.
