Where is the VIN?
5 places to find the VIN. The most reliable check is comparing the VIN on the car with the documents.
-
1
Bottom corner of the windshield
On the driver's side, on a metal plate visible from outside. The easiest spot — ask the seller for a photo.
-
2
Driver's door pillar
Open the door: the B-pillar sticker shows the VIN, production date and tire pressure.
-
3
Engine bay
Under the hood, stamped on the firewall or near the strut tower.
-
4
Floor and under the seat
On many models the VIN is stamped into the floor under the front passenger seat.
-
5
Documents
The registration certificate, insurance policy and customs papers all show the VIN.
Important tip
The VIN on the car must match the documents character by character. If it doesn't, walk away.
